Hastelloy Bolts for Acid Contaminated Chloride

Q: I have an application that is exposed to mainly chloride but has some other acid contamination. Can I still use titanium to protect for corrosion.
A: Though titanium fasteners are highly resistant to chloride – almost immune – they typically do not work well with many other mixed acid environments. Titanium protects from chloride and saltwater because the oxygen helps to regenerate its passive layer which is like a shield against corrosion. When you expose titanium to other mixed acids its passive protective layer can break down and expose the titanium to corrosion. For this type of situation, a more robust corrosion resistant alloy like Alloy 20 or Hastelloy C276 may be more suitable. Hastelloy C276 bolts will provide excellent resistance to both chlorides and harsh acids.
