Titanium Bolts & 316 Stainless – Galvanic Corrosion Risk

Q: I would like to use titanium alloy (Grade 5 / Ti6AL4V / 3.7164 / 3.7165) fasteners in combination with stainless steel (Grade 316L / 1.4404). The titanium alloy screws offer higher strengths than Stainless steel. Is it safe or is there a risk of galvanic corrosion?

A: Titanium and stainless steel are very close in the galvanic series. Titanium is slightly more “noble” so has less tendency to corrode than stainless parts. As the surface area of the titanium bolts is small compared to stainless steel, you are safe. When considering galvanic corrosion the hand rule is that the least noble material in the galvanic series should have the largest area. You can find the galvanic series here:
