Inconel 600 Bolts Compared to Ceramics in High Temperatures

Q: I have a high temperature application that runs at about 1900- 2000F. Would a ceramic bolt be a good idea. I need to have some strength and Alumina says it offers 75 ksi UTS? Will that work?

A: Ceramics are not often a good idea when their are any strength requirements. They are strictly used for applications that soly require extreme temperature resistance of over 2000F in a non-vacuum environment. Though they do offer “strength” in terms of tensile strength, they offer no yield strength; and can be brittle and break. In this case, I would recommend you try Inconel 600 bolts. They have a tensile strength of 94 ksi and a yield strength of 37 ksi. In addition, these Inconel bolts‘ high temperature resistance fits perfectly into your necessary range with a max usable temperature of 2000F.
