Nitronic 60 vs A286 for High Temperatures

Q:How does Nitronic 60 compare to an A286 bolt for high temperature strength?

A: That depends on the strength required and the temperature of your application. A Nitronic 60 bolt is known for its high temperature properties up to 1800F. At these extreme temperatures it can offer good resistance to wear, fretting, and galling; and oxidation resistance comparable to that of 309 stainless. On the other hand it doesn’t offer the high strength of A286. Nitronic 60 offers 95ksi UTS compared to the 120-160ksi UTS of A286. A286 bolts offer excellent high strength, creep resistance and oxidation resistance to a temperature of 1300F – not as high as Nitronic. So it will depend on the temperature range and strength you require.

A286 vs Hastelloy for High Temperature & Strong Fastener

Q: I’m looking for a high temperature, strong fastener. I noticed that Hastelloy C276 bolts can be used to 1500F where A286 screws can only be used to 1300F. Does that make Hastelloy a better choice?
A: Typically not. Hastelloy screws are most often used for high temperature corrosion. For example hot sulfuric acid. In terms of high temperature strength they are not a good choice. They only offer 100 ksi of tensile strength compared to A286 which offers 120-160 ksi. A286 bolts are known for their high temperature strength and would be a much better choice in your situation. A286 is an age hardened alloy which offers strength, as well as oxidation and creep resistance at high temperatures.

A286 Bolts for Diesel Engine Exhaust Stream

Q:  Looking for bolts that will be used for large Diesel engine exhaust compensators in a power plant. The normal operating temp of the exhaust is 700 degrees F at full load. Loads do fluctuate often and engines experience downtime. The exhaust system does experience extreme force and vibration. Any suggestions?

A:  It sounds like a safe bet would be A286 bolts. This material is geared for high temperature exhaust streams and will do well in this kind of environment. A286 is an age hardened material that can retain its strength to 1300°F. They also offer oxidation resistance to 1500°F . A286 fasteners offer 130ksi UTS and of 85ksi yield strength.
