Monel 400 Bolts for Caustic Solutions?

Q:
I’m using a caustic soda solution to remove sulfur in a petroleum refinery. The steel bolts are NOT cutting it. Any suggestions? I don’t have a huge budget, so I’m hoping I don’t need Hastelloy or Tantalum fasteners?
A:
Nope…You don’t need anything that highly priced. For this situation Monel 400 bolts, which are relatively moderately priced mid-ranged nickel alloy will do the trick. Monel 400 fasteners are often used in caustic situations where the temperatures and concentrations are too strong for steel. I’ve seen it used for stripping towers, heaters and reboilers, handling caustic solutions at 40% and 300F. Hopefully these fasteners will fit your needs.
